Day 3: Draw Album Art

“Don’t want to be an American idiot, one nation controlled by the media. Information age of hysteria, it’s calling out to idiot America.”

Drawing of the Green Day album, American Idiot.

Since we are in an election year, Green Day’s American Idiot feels appropriate. I would have drawn Dookie, but I don’t have that kind of time. I guess Green Day is the voice of my generation (if you don’t count Nirvana). I remember playing Dookie at full volume while driving around town. I love the feeling of anarchy and rebellion that they embody.

American Idiot was written after 9-11 and I think it really captures the feelings of most people my age at that time. There was this feeling of “nothing will ever be the same.” There was an “us vs. them” vibe that we had never seen, people were hell-bent on killing other people, and our rights have disappeared almost overnight. It was insane. And we are still feeling the effects of that day.

The coolest thing about this album is that it became a Broadway musical. Pretty amazing for a three-piece neo-punk band. Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year too. Crazy.
