28 to Make: Day Nine

This post is part of a series called 28 to Make, daily creative exercises provided by CreativeLive. See all the finished projects on Instagram under #28ToMake.

Day 9: Scribbles & Shapes

Find a random scribble or shape and draw something inside it. This was tons of fun.

Sketch of a man reading a book.

Hilariously, I had a conversation about this exact project today before I knew what it was. Another graphic designer that I work with saw my 28 to Make drawings on Instagram and we were talking about the drawing process. He was showing me some Instagram posts from Tom Bancroft, a former Disney animator famous for creating the character Mushu from Mulan. Mr. Bancroft uses this exercise as a warm-up for his character design students. So, we’re in happy company here.

This exercise really forces you to see things differently which is a big part of being able to draw well. The first thing you learn is to really see what you are drawing instead of just drawing what you think it looks like. Easier said than done, but this exercise really helps.
