28 to Make: Day Five

This post is part of a series called 28 to Make, daily creative exercises provided by CreativeLive. See all the finished projects on Instagram under #28ToMake.

Day 5: Draw a Receipt

Here’s a receipt from my most frequented store, Target. It’s from a couple of months ago when I thought it would be a good idea to dye my hair at home, then I hated it and had to buy this stuff called Color Oops to get rid of the color. It really worked, but it was a long, boring process I hope to never repeat. From now on, it’s the salon for me.

Drawing of a receipt for Color Oops from Target.

This was a really fun project. I loved using the Micron pen more than I thought I would. I really like to erase mistakes so I thought the Micron would stress me out, but it was cool. And I think my drawing looks more “professional” somehow by using the pen. What do you think?

Here’s what I learned: I am really bad at writing/making letters in a straight line, and I am equally horrible at making letters that are different from the way I actually write. I noticed I was making the letter before I thought about it and would catch myself and have to go back to change it. Do any of you have that problem?

  1. Making a receipt is fun? I’d rather pen a novel or poem. 😛

I would have the same difficulties you had. I am also a big corrector of mistakes (or so nervous about making any) that I prefer pencil (currently 4B). [I used to use no. 2’s exclusively–because they were just what we used in school–and struggled with getting a quality line and erasing cleanly.]

Have you ever drawn a self-portrait? I’d like to see that (judging from your smiley profile image). 🙂

    1. I think just the drawing part is fun. Not seeing how much I spent on hair color stuff. 🙂

Over the past week I’ve mostly used #2 pencil. To be honest, I like using charcoal. Maybe because that’s what I used in drawing classes and I like to shade with it. It feels less permanent and easily fixed. But currently I’m trying to live with my mistakes instead of getting rid of them (for the most part, anyway.)

I have drawn self portraits before, a couple of times. I wasn’t very good at it. I think there is a blind self-portrait coming up in the 28 to Make series, so that will be fun. And after I’m finished with 28 to Make, I think I’m going to start the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain exercises and that starts and ends with a self-portrait. So stay tuned! 🙂

      1. I wasn’t even thinking of the cost to your wallet/hair. Do you HAVE to color your hair or is it a preference?

But, drawing a receipt–to me–is like drawing the cover of a book that’s just letters. I’d rather draw some fantasy image and then add text.

To live with mistakes…I guess would require me/us to house sketch books and just fill the pages with practice drawings. I cannot imagine declaring a piece finished for gallery study and not fret about people seeing my mistakes (whether they see the ones I do or not).

Blind self-portrait? As in without a mirror or photo? I have a few of those on my blog; I consider them cartoons.

You are doing the opposite side of the brain practice? Maybe we should practice together. But, I cannot commit to a schedule. None of this “every day of the month/year drawing marathon” stuff for me. I’d burn out too quickly.
